Reading Time: 10 minutes
Completion Time: 30 minutes.
Step 1. Setting up your domain name.
You’ll need a domain name to represent your brand or business (this tutorial is the correct way so this will be for a self-hosted blog that requires a domain name). What’s your blog going to be about? Let’s say you’ll be running a blog about a reindeer farm. You could search for domains with the word reindeer in them. Here’s a great read on choosing a domain name if you’d like further help.
A domain name is registered annually for around $19.99 USD. Grab yours before someone else does!
Step 2. Find a home for your blog.
This home is also known as Website Hosting. This is where you’ll be able to create your blog and everything associated with it. Things like creating branded emails, [email protected] .com and install your free complimentary SSL Certificate (HTTPS) for required security (ogderek members). You’ll have these options and more in your cPanel.
Website Hosting plans come in different sizes. For the do it yourselfe’rs, which is most likely you since you’re still reading this, you’ll be good with just $5 USD dollars a month, that’s it!
Step 3. Install your WordPress blog.
WordPress currently provides over 1/3 of the internet’s websites. That’s a whole lot of smart users! WordPress is by far the best blog solution. You’ll need to login to your website hosting control panel, cPanel. You can access this in the Members Area of your hosting account. You can also visit,
yourdomain .com/cpanel and provide your credentials.
Once you’re logged in your websites cPanel, travel downward till you see Security – Let’s Encrypt SSL and click it! Photo below.
Once clicked a new screen will pop up where you can issue your SSL Certificate. Click it. That’s it, installed and ready for the next step. Photo below.
Travel back to your websites cPanel home screen and go all the way towards the bottom where you’ll see WordPress, click it. Photo below.
Next, you’ll see an install button, click it. A new screen will pop up with various fields. I’ll guide you through these simple steps.
If your site has SSL, then please choose the HTTPS protocol. This is the first option you’ll see. You have already installed your SSL so choose the HTTPS protocol if it already didn’t auto add it for you.
Please choose the domain to install the software. This is the second option. Make sure your domain is in that spot.
The directory is relative to your domain and should not exist. e.g. To install at http://mydomain/dir/ just type dir. To install only in http://mydomain/ leave this empty. This is the third option. In most cases, you should leave this blank. Take out the WP already in the field. Simply leave it blank.
- Under site settings you can simply put in your preferred information, you can change this later. Do not check the multi-site box, WPMU. Same goes for the admin account sections. I suggest you use the password generator provided. Choose your language and I also suggest checking the box to add Limit Login Attempts (Loginizer).
- Now we’ve come to the advanced settings tab. If you want and I highly suggest, check the auto upgrade buttons so they automatically take care of the basics. Also, you’ll see a section of themes you can choose to have installed with your WordPress installation. A theme is basically your website pre-built. They have a lot of blog type themes. This isn’t required but can help you get a head start. Now go ahead and click install!
Alright, now we’re ready to move forward! You ready?
Follow the WP-ADMIN link to visit your dashboard. This is your WordPress backend where you control things like your theme, pages, and articles. If you’d like to look through 5000+ WordPress themes for your website simply click on Appearance in your dashboard – themes.
Once you choose a theme you like, hover over it and click install, then after it installs you’ll need to click the activate button. You can play with the look and feel of your theme in your dashboard – appearance – customize.
Now it’s about time to just dive in with your first blog post, shall we? Navigate to Add New under Posts in your WordPress dashboard. Photo below.
Now to get familiar with the blogging system fill out some info and publish your first article! Photo below.
That’s it. Take a look at your blog. You’ll see your fresh article posted. Now obviously there are a lot of options and things to learn as you go. It’s alright though and with some time and effort, you’ll be a blogging champion in no time at all!
They’re a some free and paid website builders also for users wanting to do more types of customizations to their WordPress blog/website.
Now I’m guessing you might have some special needs for your blog or website. Have peace of mind knowing WordPress has over 50 thousand plugins to help assist you and your website/blog. You can find these plugins by navigating to your WordPress dashboard – Plugins – Add New. You can search for things like Google Analytics to track your blog visitors or a contact form. Always check the reviews and credibility of plugins as there are a lot. Most plugins don’t require a lot of knowledge but just basic reading and knowing how to follow instructions.
That’s really it. Of course, you can take this to another level in due time but for the basics you got it.
